Anlong Veng
From 1979 until late 1997, this area of Oddar Meanchey province was
controlled by Khmer Rouge armies. Some remaining statues describe the
way the rebels lived and how they arranged their troops during their
bloody struggle against the government.
Tourists that go to Anlong Veng do so to see and photograph the
sites, associated with this regime. The government plans to turn this
area into a historical site to attract more tourists.
One of the places of interest is the house formerly owned by the
infamous Khmer Rouge commander Ta Mok. A health centre, a pagoda and a
school are also attributed to him. A pile of tyres in the forest marks
the funeral pyre and burial site of Pol Pot.
The statue on the main intersection is a gift by Samdech Hun Sen and
symbolises the return to peace.
