Towns and cities

Tbaeng Meanchey (Tbeng Meanchey)

The capital of Preah Vihear province is a sleepy town where not much happens. Although the province is home to the famous Preah Vihear temple, predating Angkor Wat, due to bad road conditions, most visits to the temple complex enter from the Thai side.

While in town, visit the Weaves Cambodia, Co. LTD. and you may be able to buy some rare gifts made from real quality silk. The company started out as the Joom Noon silk weaving project for the handicapped in 1998 by Bud Gibbons of Veterans International. The employees are victims of landmines and polio and are preserving and promoting traditional Khmer weaving techniques.

There are numerous other temples and sites in the province worth a visit if you can organise your own transport. You then will have to spend at least one night in this provincial capital.

  • Koh Ker temple complex. Koh Ker was once a capital city of Cambodia.
  • Bakan or Preah Khan temples: 105 kilometres southwest of the provincial town, built under the reign of King Suryavarman I (1002-1050), was a royal palace and a worship place. The site used to be a hiding place for king Jayavarman VII before he ascended to the throne.
  • Noreay temples, Five temples made of Sandstone, laterite and brick, 32 kilometres northeast of the provincial town. Built in the 7th century.
  • Phnom Pralean temple: a temple built to worship Brahmanism, on top of a 180 metres hill, about 25 kilometres from the provincial town
  • Neak Buos temple 75 kilometres north of Tbaeng Meanchey, this sandstone laterite and brick temple is difficult to reach because of road conditions
  • Krapum Chhouk temple: built in the 10th century in laterite and stone, 45 kilometres south of Tbaeng Meanchey
