Banteay Samre

This fortified temple, surrounded by moats was built in the middle of the 12th century under king Suryavarman II (1113-1150). The French spent eight years rebuilding this temple, using the original methods and materials.

It contains well-preserved bas-reliefs depicting scenes of the Vishnu and Krishna legends.

Most visitors, too exhausted from running around, don't make it to this temple and that's good news for anyone wanting to escape the crowds.

Legend:

The monument itself has its own story. It tells of the accession to the throne of a poor farmer of Samre origin named Pou, who specialised in the cultivation of sweet cucumbers - the seeds of which he had received in some supernatural manner.
