Banteay Srey

This exquisite Hindu temple, "the citadel of women" was started in 967 Rajendravarman II (944-968) and finished under Jayavarman V (968-1001). It is situated some 25 kilometres northeast of the Bayon. It is a fairy palace in the heart of an immense and mysterious forest. Very well preserved and small in size, it is made of pink sandstone and very finely sculptured with a surprising richness of detail.

Monkeys and Guradas replace the lions traditionally guarding the doors of the temple.
