The Northern and Southern Khleangs

These are two libraries, constructed by king Jayavarman V (968-1001) in the late 10th century and completed by king Suryavarman I (1002-1050) in the early 11th century, near to the royal palace. Located behind the Suor Proat and facing the terrace of the elephants and the terrace of the leper king, their large sandstone facades contrast quite well against a jungle background.

The buildings were used to store lingas and other icons. They may also have served to welcome foreign dignitaries, scholars suggest.
