Phnom Sar Sear

Phnom Sar Sear is a nature and cultural site, located about 14 kilometres southeast of Kep city. It is composed of three small mountains of about 1.5 square kilometres and is approximately 40 metres high. Tourists can explore two natural caves: Phnom Dorei Sar and Phnom Ach Prochiev. In the Phnom Dorei Sar cave, there is a beautiful mountain well called Viel Sre Muoy Roy.

On the mountain top sits a colourful, finely sculptedstupa which was built in 1964 by prince Rasmei Sophoan. At the foot of the mountain, there are some small halls where monks and nuns meditate. The site is a place where people go to pray for good fortune.

The name is related to the legend of prince Sakor Reach. While the prince was fleeing for the commander of Angkor Thom, he led his troops to this place. When he reached this mountain, he got off his horse and moved secretly ahead of his pursuers along the mountainside. Sar Sear is Khmer for 'to move furtively'.

Because of the fresh air and gorgeous natural scenery, this site is popular with tourists throughout the year. From the mountain top, one has an outstanding view over the rice paddies, the sea and the islands below.
