Towns and cities
Sihanoukville (Kampong Saom)

Cambodia's only beach resort and national
deepwater seaport, which handles most of the country's international
trade. Cambodians will call it Kampong Saom, but its official name is
since 1993, when Cambodia became a kingdom again, is Sihanoukville (or
Krong Preah Sihanouk). It is Cambodia's fourth largest city.
Constructed as a port city in the late 1950s, the town is much newer,
more urban and cosmopolitan than most Cambodian provincial cities. The
original name of the city, Kampong Saom, was changed to the present one
in honour of the now King-Father Norodom Sihanouk. |
Before the Khmer Rouges
took power, the town was a popular resort for Cambodia's elite, but
the Khmer Rouge killed most of the Cambodian privileged.
After the end of the civil war, the town was first
rediscovered by backpackers, but lately the construction of luxury
hotel opens the town up for well-heeled travellers. The Sokha hotel
and a nine-hole golf course being developed by Malaysia's Ariston
Holdings along nearby Ochheuteal beach are attractions that allow
the town to compete with the likes of Thailand's Phukhet and
Indonesia's Bali. The sand is whiter and the water is cleaner, which
make this beach resort the superior alternative. |
Beaches

Sihanoukville is surrounded by palm-fringed sandy beaches and
pristine tropical islands off its south and west coast. Beaches are off
course the main attractions. Beaches here lye on the west contour of the
city, from north to south, namely:
- Victory Beach, south of the port, overlooked by the
weather station hill, the budget traveller centre of town, was the
original backpacker beach and still popular with budget travellers.
It offers narrow sand area and a view on the port but it is a great
place to watch sunset or to party. The southern side is lovely.
- Lamherkay Beach, where the Hawaii Seaview Restaurant is
located. It is the place where a French-Cambodian construction team
laid groundwork for the construction of the new Port of Kampong Saom
during 1950s. At this beach, you can hire a boat to nearby islands.
- Koh Pos Beach, a small beach
on an island, some 800 metres off the coast has rocky waters. Dine at the
Treasure Island Seafood Restaurant.
- Sokha beach belongs to a major hotel resort and most of the
beach is reserved for guests only. It is Sihanoukville's' first 5
star resort, with 200 rooms. Its white sands are bordered by rocks
on either end.
|
- Independence Beach, named after the old Independence hotel.
there is a selection of the usual food stalls set just off the beach
with plentiful shade. Although the beach has some of little rocky
spots, its long stretch of clean sand makes it a great spot for relaxing, feasting and swimming.
This beach is a favourite with the locals.
- Serendipity Beach, just east of Sokha beach, has bungalows and guesthouse rooms right
on the sand which make it a favourite with backpackers. Uncle Bob’s 24-hour restaurant serves great
food all day and all night from a professional kitchen maintained to
western standards.
- Ochheuteal Beach, the longest and therefore less crowded
beach, lined with pine trees, grass umbrellas, rental chairs and
little drink huts. There are lots of good restaurants and bars at
the beach. Go to the south side of the beach if you are looking for
some privacy.
- Hawaii Beach is usually very quiet. Protected from the wind
by Snake Island, it is a good place to hide out if the wind is up.
As it is very shallow, it can be a good place if you have kids.
- Otres beach is a simple and unembellished
beach, about 4 kilometres from town. Sometimes called the sister beach
of Ochheuteal beach, it is narrower than the latter.

The most popular beaches are Ochheuteal beach, Independence beach and
Victory beach.
Other attractions
| Do not fail to visit the
Wat Leu pagoda, perched on one of the hills around
Sihanoulville. From there you will have a magnificent view over the
town and the beaches. If you have the time, make an excursion to the Kbal Chhay waterfall
or to the Preah Sihanouk Ream national park.
Or take a boat trip to the tropical islands just
off the coast of Sihanoukville. You can even stay a few days on
Bamboo island and sleep overnight in the huts. |
The Kbal Chhay
waterfall is located about 16 kilometres north of Sihanoukville. Its
water comes from different sources along the mountain range but only
three of them are visible. The 14 metres high waterfall is situated at
the location where those three water sources join.
The Preah
Sihanouk Ream national park, open since 1993, is at a distance of 18
kilometres of the town. It covers 21,000 hectares and features secluded
beaches, mangrove forests, tropical jungles, monkeys and 155 different
species of birds. During the months of December and January, one might
see the famous white fresh water dolphin. |
