Local markets
Phsar Thmey (central market) and Phsar Tuol Tompung
(Russian market) are the two markets most frequented by visitors. Some
other of the bigger markets may have just the product you were looking
for, but most is just duplication of the other markets. Phsar Olympik
(Olympic market) on the south side of the Olympic stadium and Phsar
O'rusey are some of the biggest ones.
Phsar Kandal (central market for the Khmer, Phsar Thmey
really means 'New Market) north of Wat Unalom a block away from the
riverside is very popular with Cambodians.
For second hand stuff, you may be best served at Phsar Chah (old
market) in street 110 near to the river side. Also look at the other side
direction post office.
Phsar Tuol Tompoung, also called the Russian market because in
the eighties, Russian expatriates and development workers preferred to do
their shopping here. Prices may be slightly higher than most other
markets, but quality is usual superior. You will find at this market the
greatest choice of locally made textiles and handicrafts. You may stumble
upon some genuine antiques if you are lucky.
None of the Cambodian markets will have marked prices, prices vary
according to the perceived status of the buyer. You can bargain on the
prices. Women are expected to bargain sharper prices than men. Culturally,
men are expected to spend money more easily. I myself never go to the
Cambodian markets. I let my wife do the shopping, she pays about half of
what I would pay after bargaining.
