| Behind around the the Phnom Penh hotel is
Boeung Kak Lake, Phnom Penh's backpacker's area. Cheap guesthouses mix
with tourist restaurants that offer quite decent food for very
reasonable
prices, bars, internet and souvenir shops.
Moto-dups and private
entrepreneurs offer to provide you with all the backpackers stereotype
needs requirements.
You may be openly hassled on the streets to buy "ganchha" (local
marihuana) or other drugs - just say "no", once they know you, they
may leave you at peace.
The Lake Side #10 guesthouse serves
excellent western, Indian and Khmer food at backpacker prices.
Internet available downstairs |
Almost next doors is the
Floating
Island guesthouse with the breeziest balcony bar on the lake,
recently reopened by some young enterprising Khmers with good taste
for western music. Their menu lists fine pizzas and pastas next to
Khmer dishes. For lodging we used to advise The
Café Freedom and Lodge, but this we can do no longer, as the
owner of the house has ended the lease and is managing the
guesthouse himself. The guest house is only half of the size in its
heydays anyway. Fred moved on to Koh Kong and do there whatever it is
he does.
When price matters,
Lakeside #10 guesthouse and The Floating Island offer rooms starting at $2 per night and
off season, they have several bargains on those incredible prices.
They may be your best choices. |
