Where to goAngkor BoreiAngkor Borei (ancient city) used to be the capital of the Water Chenla but some artefacts date back to the Funan period (4th and 5th centuries). Phnom Da is an archaeological site in Angkor Borei, worth all the trouble it takes to get there. Walking through the streets of this small riverside town with a population of around 14,000, you wouldn't realise that once this was the capital city of an ancient civilisation. Since many of the archaeological remnants have been used to fill the potholes in the street, you will literately be walking on the ancient history of the Khmer empire. The town is located at the Prek Angkor river, a tributary of the Tonle Bassac river, which in turn joins the Mekong in Phnom Penh. There is a small museum in Angkor Borei displaying some of the artefacts. It shows sculptures of the Phnom Da area and pottery going back to the Funan period.
How to get thereA boat from the provincial capital Takeo is still the favoured means of transportation to Angkor Borei. The boats leave from a bend in the river. Optionally, with a guide, it is possible to reach Angkor Borei by motor bike during dry season but it will be a rough ride there and back. |
